Protagonist Picks 'Em - April 12th - 15th

There’s so much soccer going on! Our staff and contributors pick out a few games from our favorite leagues and competitions; from MASL Semi Finals to the USASA National Amateur Cup, USL Championship, UPSL, NPSL, Metroplex Prem, Bay State Soccer League and the NY Cosmo League - Let’s get stuck in!

  • Josh Duder Picks…

    • Hodler Miami FC vs Miami United FC - UPSL

      • Sat, 04/13 - 6:15pm PT / 9:15pm ET
at UPSL Stadium in Miami, FL

      • Hodler Miami are 3rd in their division with a pair of wins, a loss, and a postponed game. The season is young, and they’re led by Juan Arango with a pair of goals from the midfield - meanwhile, they face Miami United FC, who lost their opening game but have since won two in a row. Their own Luis Peralta has a pair of goals. While that’s all good and fine, Miami United have also won their last two US Open Cup matches in succession, 1-0 over MLSNP side Chattanooga FC then 2-0 over NISA side Club de Lyon FC. Just days after this UPSL league fixture, they’re set to travel to Tennessee to take on their toughest opponent yet, Memphis 901 FC of the USL Championship. This is a huge week for Miami United FC!

  • Josh Duder Picks…

    • Napa Valley 1839 FC vs El Farolito FC - NPSL

      • Sat, 04/13- 7:00pm PT / 10:00pm ET
at Justin Siena Dodd-Stadium in Napa, CA

      • Napa Valley 1839 FC and the now quite popular El Farolito FC are 1 & 2, respectively, in the NPSL Golden Gate Conference. While Napa are cooking with fire right now, 9 points from 3 played with a +6 Goal Differential, El Faro are working on two stovetops and are also unbeaten in league play with 2 wins and a draw. Additionally, they have played the role of Burrito Cinderella, capturing the imagination of US Soccer fans (or at least those willing to accept life exists outside MLS never never land). El Faro, who have actually won the US Open Cup 20 years ago as CD Mexico, have knocked out a scrubby MSLNP team in Portland then picked-off a struggling USL League One side in Central Valley Cali. Just days after this important league game, they head across the San Francisco Bay, to face the Oakland Roots.

  • Ben Brannigan Picks…

    • Denton Diablos Estudiantes vs The International Threat AND Denton Diablos Reserves vs FC Ladera Boys - Metroplex Premier League, Double-Header

      • Sat, 04/13 - First Match is at 4:00pm Central and Second Match is at 7:00pm
at North Lakes Park in Denton, TX

      • A proper unique double header in MPL with the diablos showing off the best that Denton has to offer against two good organizations making trip up from Dallas , the international threat II boys will be looking to win for Dallas as will the Ladera Boys , this will be great night out at a great venue , and shows exactly what the MPL is about bringing the DFW soccer community together to showcase it like no one else has done before . Let’s get out and support them , well worth an evening out in Denton.

  • Josh Duder Picks…

    • Providence City FC vs Rovers FC - Bay State Soccer League

      • Sat, 04/13 - 10:00am PT / 1:00pm ET
at North Smithfield HS in North Smithfield, RI

      • Providence City FC  have yet to play this season… for whatever reason. They are set to host Rovers FC, who lost their first match of the season last week, 1-4 to FC Omens. This is either a chance for FC Omens to get back to .500 or its when the Rogues start their unbeaten run. Either way, if you’re in Rhode Island, skip the pros and go party with the Rogues.

  • Ryan Allen Picks…

    • Rhode Island FC vs Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC - USL Championship

      • Sat 04/13 - 4:00pm PT / 7:00am ET
at Beirne Stadium in Rhode Island

      • Khano Smith and Rhode Island host a longtime USL manager, Bob Lilley, and his Pittsburgh Riverhounds this weekend. Both clubs are looking for their first win of the season, the last two Eastern Conference clubs this year without a win. Pittsburgh has found themselves in uncharted waters with a start to the season that is unbecoming of Bob Lilley teams we’ve known of previous seasons, especially last season’s shield winners.

  • Michael Battista Picks…

    • Steel City FC (MWPL) vs Czarni Jaslo Chicago (MWPL) - USASA Region II, Amateur Cup - Round 2

      • Sun, 04/14 - 6:30pm CT / 7:30pm ET
at Kankakee High School in Kankakee, IL

      • The U.S. Adult Soccer Association National Amateur Cup continues and officially kicks off in the Midwest this weekend as both the first and second rounds of the USASA Region II Amateur Cup take place. Since 10 teams from the Midwest Premier League entered the field of 24, it's not surprising that there’s an all MWPL clash this early. Czarni Jaslo Chicago are the defending MWPL Heartland Division champions after losing only one league match in 2023. Hosts Steel City FC is coming off a .500 season in the Heartland, but will be looking to improve on its 2-1-1 all time record in the Amateur Cup (two wins, one loss, one “tie” in a game decided via penalty kicks - which it lost). With the MWPL season still a month away, both teams can gain momentum and inch closer to the Bill Davey Amateur Cup (awarded to the USASA Region II champion) with a win.

  • Josh Duder Picks…

    • FC Sandzak vs Richmond County FC - NY Cosmo League

      • Sun, 04/14 - 5:00pm PT / 8:00pm ET
        at Randalls Island, Field 75

      • Division 1 leaders Richmond County FC have a 5 point cushion and two games in hand over their nearest competitors. They head out to Randalls Island this weekend to face 4th place FC Sandzak, whom they lost to back in September 1-2 when it was their turn to host, at Owl Hollow Field - can FC Sandzak do the double over the hopeful champions!?

  • Dan Vaughn Picks…

    • Utica City FC vs KC Comets - MASL, Semi Finals

      • Mon, 04/15 - 3:05pm PT / 6:05pm ET
at Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, NY

      • The first match of this semi final best of three was a barn burner, with Kansas City winning in overtime 5-4. After falling behind 4-1, Utica stormed back to even the score and force overtime, proving that these teams are evenly matched. This has been a tight matchup all season but Kansas City is on a roll, winning their last 6 matches. This is an absolute dream of a matchup between these two, can’t wait to see who wins and advances!
