USL W League 3+1

Big weekend in the USL W League! We’re starting to see some separation as teams try to find the will to get to the top of their divisions. We take a look at three of the matches from this week and one from the next!

Review

Detroit 2-1 Midwest United

I picked this as a match to watch this weekend, because the playoff implications and it delivered! Undefeated Detroit City FC remains atop the Great Lakes Division with 8 wins and 2 draws. Midwest United drops to third with the loss, but let’s get into the action!

The first goal came on a set piece in the 25th minute, just outside the box. The ball somehow got through the wall, slowly rolling towards the net and the United keeper didn’t attack quick enough. The same can’t be said for Joyelle Washington, who pounced on it and put it past the keeper to open the scoring. Washington would have a hand in the second goal, getting on the end of a long pass up the left side of the field. Her run led her into the box and her shot was blocked by a defender and bounced around, eventually to the feet of Kayla Addison, who put it bed. Regan Berg would score a penalty for United to get one back, but not enough to change the result. Big win for Le Rouge!

River Light FC 12-0 RKC Third Coast

Not often that you write about a blowout, but holy cow. Hard to ignore a scoreline like this one. River Light has had an impressive season, playing in a division that has been OWNED by Minnesota Aurora. But in second place, River Light is angling for a potential playoff berth and playing like the results really matter (they do!). RKC Third Coast has had a rough season and this result is just another one in the pile.

It would be goofy to go play by play through this match, but, regardless, 10 players would partner to score the 12 goals, with braces from Devin Lynch and Sophia Skoubis. With three more matches to go to finish the regular season, River Light will hope to keep the ball rolling against Rochester later this week.

Minnesota Aurora 6-0 Chicago Dutch Lions

We’re near the ending of the third season of Aurora soccer and the team refuses to lose a regular season match. That run of form has obviously happened with players moving in and out of the program, a big head coaching change, and plenty of distractions. This team just wins in the regular season. This match was no exception.

This match was Indigenous Peoples Match and featured some special guests.

Six different players would score the goals for Aurora, but the superstar of the match was Katie Duong, who had 3 assists and a goal. But what a goal! Already up 2-0, Katie took the ball on the left side of the field, dribbled and then fired a thunderbastard of a shot from 30 yards out (thanks American football lines for that) that burned the keeper and the back of the net. After the match, she was quick to say that her teammates “made it easy” for her (thanks to Equal Time Soccer for the post match interviews).

Aurora is sitting comfortably in the top spot of the Heartland Division and simply needs to finish the season as it has the last three. Just win, baby!

San Francisco Glens vs Cal Storm

Soccer royalty on display. Since coming to the W League, Cal Storm has watched Glens run roughshod over the NorCal Division. Now Storm is a single point back from Glens and has everything to play for in this epic battle between two of the W League’s best. Cannot wait to see this match!
