Chicago House AC (NISA)
So who are YOU and what's your position with the club?
My name is Walter Nolan-Cohhn and I am the Director of Marketing and Communications for Chicago's new pro soccer team in the National Independent Soccer Association, Chicago House Athletic Club. I was born and raised in Chicago, attended Indiana University, and have been working in Minor League sports since 2016. Prior to joining CHAC, I worked for the Charleston RiverDogs and St. Paul Saints in Minor League Baseball as well as the Athletics Department at Indiana University while I was attending.
The name "House AC" was picked by the fans, how does the club try to connect to the music/scene?Authentically. Period. We understand the meaning of (and are continuing to learn about) the long, rich history of House Music in the city of Chicago, and we are doing everything we can to not only celebrate it, but to respect it. This is a genre that is near and dear to a lot of people worldwide and part of the mission of this organization is to pay well-deserved homage to the music. Slang Music Group, which is made up of some of the pioneers of House music, has been very influential in helping us connect genuinely to the culture and scene of House Music. Vince Lawrence and his team has helped introduce us to the plentiful pioneers of House, including Marshall Jefferson, The Chosen Few DJs, and more. Myself, our Front Office and our team have had the privilege of learning the history and culture of House, and that has truly helped us connect to the city where House Music was born. We are one of a handful of professional sports teams in the US that are named after a music genre, and we do not take that lightly. If we're going to embrace the House Music culture, we're going to do everything in our power to do it authentically.
Three house tracks everyone should listen to?
THE House track that everyone should listen to is This Is Chicago House! by Vince Lawrence and Chuck the Voice. This is the team anthem that we worked with producer Vince Lawrence on. If you come to a Chicago House match, you will hear it loud and proud over the SeatGeek Stadium speakers. It's streaming on every platform! The other two would be Move Your Body by Marshall Jefferson (The House Anthem - an iconic and groovy track), and The Get Get Down by Paul Johnson. This season we're remembering Paul Johnson, who passed away just before the start of our inaugural season on August 4th from COVID-19 complications. RIP Paul.
Best result of the season so far?
The best result of the season has to be our first win in Chicago House AC history, when we beat Stumptown AC 1-0 on August 14th. Wojciech Wojcik scored the game winner in the 90th minute! It was a fun game to watch.
Which match does the club have circled for later this year?
I'm personally very much looking forward to our rematch with LA Force on November 6th at SeatGeek Stadium. When we played the Force in LA, it was a hard-fought match that we lost 1-0. We had quite a few opportunities that didn't go our way - I like our chances of getting three points in what should be a really fun rematch in November in Chicago.
Can you talk about a player or two we should definitely know about?
We have 23 men on this team that everyone should know about for one reason or another - there are plenty of very interesting and diverse stories among our roster. It's hard to pick two, but if I had to, I'd say (1) our captain, Drew Conner and (2) forward Wojciech Wojcik. Both of these guys are from Chicago, grew up playing in Chicago and are now representing the Chicago community. Drew used to play for the Chicago Fire, and is well-connected to the Chicago soccer scene. "Woj" (pronounced "voy") was born in Dabrowa Tarnowska, Polan and moved to Chicago at a young age. He has had a wealth of success across multiple levels of professional soccer, and he is making an impact on the field and off the field for our team. Both of these men are natural leaders in the locker room and are always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to help this organization in any way they can.
Your club has a music theme, who's the best dancer on the team?
Oh boy... this is a tough one! I know a lot of the guys on the team can dance - but I haven't seen enough of the performances to make a true judgement on this one. I will say - I've seen a few videos of midfielder Louis Bennett dancing before and/or after matches in the locker room, and he's got some moves! So I'll have to give it to Louis B.
The team has struggled a little in the first half of the season, what does a successful first season look like for Chicago House AC?
Our Head Coach, CJ Brown is doing a fantastic job with this team. I have zero doubt that success is on the horizon for the House on the field, so I will answer this question from a Front Office perspective.
