Las Vegas Quicksilvers (Southwest Premier League)
Your name, role and what community does your club represent?
Ben Thomas, Technical Director - Las Vegas, Nevada (Spring Valley)
What is the mission of the club?
We're on a mission to build an independent, community-driven, grassroots soccer club that's worth supporting
What does community mean to you?
Our community, whether we are talking about Vegas or the local soccer community, is unlike anything else. There is so much diversity, talent, and passion in this city we take so much pride in being able to represent Las Vegas in any capacity.
From the minute we launched our club, we made it a point to be community-driven. To us that means using our platform and our organization to give back to the community in any way that we can whether we are giving local players an opportunity to play at a competitive level or trying to raise awareness and fundraise for causes that we believe in. We believe that we have the opportunity to do great things in our community while using soccer as a vehicle that allows us to connect with our community in ways that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
As we continue to grow, we have recently created and filled a Community Outreach position that we are excited about.
What are some historic accomplishments for the club?
One of the better known Quicksilvers facts is that they beat the NY Cosmos 1-0 at the Silverbowl (now Sam Boyd) Stadium but we don't pretend to be the NASL team of old... Our organization embraces the history and tradition of the name but we are out to write our own chapter.
We are founding members of the Nevada Premier conference of the Southwest Premier League. We re-established the Las Vegas Quicksilvers in September of 2020 and played our first match on October 2, 2021 at Spring Valley High School.
Does the club have any historic matches? If so, explain.
Beating Pele and the New York Cosmos 1-0 in Vegas on April 9, 1977 with a goal from local soccer hero Victor Arbelaez.
What does the club want to accomplish this season?
Our goals for year 1 are really to build out our club in a sustainable manner while still pushing to qualify for the NISA Independent Cup. We want to build a local club worth supporting and in order to do that we need to exist at the highest level of play that we can sustain.
Where do you see the club in 5 years?
In 5 years I hope that we have done enough to change the Las Vegas soccer landscape to include multiple levels of soccer. We also have some dreams of seeing our club grow from just a men's side to include a women's and youth component as well.
Can you describe the club's style of play?
I'd say we play a very attacking style of football. We have a ton of talented players who are young and pacey and you can see it in some of the goals we have scored this season. Coach Rodney is very thoughtful in his tactics and while it's still too early to really say our style is x, y, or z it's definitely a lot of fun to watch.
Who are some players that everyone should watch out for?
Ulysse Pierre and Carlos Hernandez have been on their A game up top, Alan Rosales and Noe Martinez in the defense and Jonathan Longhares in the midfield. I'm missing so many great players to watch for but the reality is that we have so many talented and hardworking players.
