FC Denver (Colorado Super League)
We put out the all-call for clubs who we have not covered yet, to reach out and tell us! FC Denver, Fall 2021 Champions of the Colorado Super League, were one of the first to answer that call to action - Club President, Eric Fulton took some time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions.
When were you founded, by who, and what is the mission statement?
FC Denver (Football Club of Denver) was founded by me, Eric Fulton, in the winter of 2005/06. Our Mission is to organize and promote championship-caliber competitive soccer teams based in values of Community, Passion, and Opportunity.
What city or community do you play in? Do you connect with your community outside of soccer?
We play in leagues in the Denver metro area with regional qualifiers around the state and region. Community is one of our founding tenants. For us, building a soccer club that Denver can be proud of, that's a part of the social fabric is why we exist. In the past few years, we've organized park clean up volunteering opportunities, food drives, and a cancer charity donation soccer tournament.
Where do your players come from; college players? Local talent? Are you connected to a youth program which funnels players to your first team?
Our players come from all over. We've built our club largely through folks moving to Denver after college who found us online. More recently, we're created U19 and U23 teams to foster opportunities to get younger players to continue their playing career and bolster our future ranks.
Currently, I see you're in the Colorado Super League - I've never heard of it! Tell us more about the league and why you chose to play your soccer in that league?
We are the biggest adult soccer club in Colorado with 6 teams (4 men, 2 women). 5 of our teams play in the Colorado Premier League, under the USSSA banner. Our top men's team plays in the Colorado Super League, which currently has the best men's teams participating in the state, under the USASA banner . The level is comparable with a majority of UPSL, NPSL regions in the nation, those leagues for varios reason just haven't caught on here. Probably would make for an interesting story in itself.
How did you finish last year? How are you doing so far this year? and who is your biggest rival?
Our Women won 2021 CPL Spring Womens League. Our Men won Fall 2021 league.
A lot of teams at your level sell merchandise like scarves or kits to help pay the bills; do you have any merch for sale? If not, how helpful have your sponsors been in supporting the club?
We do some merchandise sales but it's not a big money maker. Store: https://www.brandevolutionswest.com/fc-denver We've had a good year of sponsorships. Sweet spot is in the $1500-$2000 for us, because of our number of players in our club and our successes, we can do either a jersey sponsorship or a social media sponsorship. It's hard to stay afloat at this level if you dont have someone willing to pump in 10-20K yearly, which we don’t have, but we're still here and growing after 16 years.
Is there anything important or interesting about your club none of my questions prompted you to mention?
Our Men qualified for (and won our first round matchup) in the 2018 and 2019 US Open Cup. Ultimately, we'd like to grow into a fully semi-pro/pro franchise if the investors and financials make sense. but we're not willing to do it if it doesn't look sustainable.
