FC Milwaukee Torrent (NPSL / WPSL)
What is the origin story of Milwaukee Torrent? Who founded the club and what inspired that to happen?
I got a phone call in early 2015 from the former chairman of the board of the NPSL, Joe Barrone, asking if I could field a team in the NPSL after there was an open spot for the Milwaukee area. My first thought was that we do this only when we can play with pro players so that the youth in Wisconsin has an organization they can look up and it becomes their goal to play for us.
In which league(s) do you play and with so many options for clubs these days, how often is that evaluated?
We play in the NPSL with the men’s and the WPSL with our women’s team. We participated twice in the NISA Independent Cup. Our goal is to get to the third division of pro soccer. Every league has its pro and cons. For us it was always important which league can protect our investment the best, and how is the level of competition.
Does your club operate or work with a youth organization?
We don’t have our own academy but offer to be part of the Super y league in the summer. Sooner or later, we need to start a youth program for several reasons.
In addition to developing players, where does your club draw its players from? Local tryouts? College players?
We really recruit players and had players from all over the world. In addition, we have tryouts where you most likely get the local talent. For the men’s Team it’s hard to work with college players because we try to play I to the fall. Our women’s team most likely filled with college players. We are blessed with so much talent in the state of Wisconsin that we have every year a strong and competitive team in the WPSL.
Do you have a rival or a favorite city for an away day? Who or where is that and why?
Not really, in all these years in the NPSL there was a lot of movement in the conference’s so that you don’t have many chances to build up a rivalry. When we played the Members Cup in 2019, the trips to Chattanooga, New York Cosmos, and Napa Valley will be always special.
How did you finish this season - regardless of league position, did you meet your goals? What goals are you setting for next season?
The women’s team won the conference and the men’s Team didn’t do as well as last year. The goal for the next season is to make it always better than the year before. Off the field we have a big project coming that will help us to get to the third division and needs a lot of focus.
