Battling Back

So how was the offseason/COVID year for your club and players?

Thankfully, no one involved with the club had their life or livelihood completely ruined by the pandemic. There were a few cases of guys getting sick, but luckily nothing that was too horrible or long-lasting. On the plus side, as frustrating as it was to have what I felt was our most well-executed off-season leading into the 2020 campaign completely axed by March, the time off actually gave us a chance to reevaluate how we do certain things to make the club not only bigger, but also more sustainable financially and competitively for the long haul. I’d like to think we would have worked this stuff out eventually, but having that amount of time to take full stock of our situation and deciding that it was worth continuing and had potential upside for the future ended up being massive.

Started off the season 2-0, scoring 8 goals. Can you talk about the results and who's doing the scoring for the club?

It’s been a good start in D2, and we’ve got unfinished business having gone top of the league last year but losing the fall playoff in the final. We’ve done a little bit of recruiting to address issues with being more clinical in front of goal and keeping the back line tighter, as well as adding some help in the goalkeeping department. Our goals have come from a number of different players, so it remains to be seen who the big marksman is going to be this year, but honestly, it’s good to have multiple players capable of ripping twine instead of relying on a limited range of players to get it done.

Is getting promoted to Division 1 your biggest priority this year?

Absolutely. It remains to be seen how the league is going to handle pro/rel once the fall half of the season gets going, but this is something we’ve been working towards for the past three years and are probably in our best position yet to get it done. Promotion to the top flight for me is what would be the next major step forward in the maturation of this club.

Who do you see as your biggest opponent?

I realize that this is a non-answer, but anyone can beat anyone in the BSSL on the right day. There really are no days off. There are plenty of teams that may not have much in the way of technically gifted players, but will have every guy running at full pace for 90 minutes, get a couple scrappy goals, and suddenly you’ve dropped a result you may have thought was in the bag based on positions in the table. I respect every team equally in the sense that anything could happen on any given Saturday, so it’s important to make sure that your own house is in order ahead of time. As far as rivals, etc...it’s been a while. We’ve had some epic battles with Safira and Olympiakos in past leagues and competitions, and Kendall Wanderers as well to some extent too, but I think the answer to that will be clearer a year from now depending on whether or not we get promoted.

How has the experience in BSSL been in comparison to other leagues?

BSSL is proudly itself and its metronome-like consistency and competitive integrity year-to-year is awesome. COVID has obviously caused problems and inconveniences, and of course there are little stupid gripes over minutiae that happen along the way even in normal times, but in comparison to other leagues there hasn’t been anything better thus far. The fact that the league is a non-profit, user-friendly for clubs regardless of how long they’ve been around, and is basically volunteer-run not only ensures that the sustainability, quality, and consistency remain intact, but on a grander scale, allows it to continue to affirm itself as a monolith of the game around New England. That’s huge, because it contributes to the overall strength of football culture around here, and I think it could be an excellent regional foundation/pipeline in the event of an open system in this country.

Anything else we should know about your club?

We’re a small but hard-working club and always down to give a leg up to anyone similarly minded trying to figure out a way forward in the game. @bostonsiegefc on the Instagram is the best way to get in touch. Thanks for the interview!
