Protagonist's Weekend Previews - January 25th & 26th
This weekend our writers and guests take a look indoors at MASL and MASLW with teams jockeying for the top spots and scrapping to avoid the bottom. We also have one more playoff game before the UPSL heads off to their National Championships. Let’s take a look at those games and why you should try to watch them if possible.
Josh Duder Picks…
FC Folsom vs LA 10 FC in UPSL, Playoffs
Sat, 01/25 - 3:00pm PT / 6:00pm ET
at Ohlone College in CA
NorCal North Champions, FC Folsom, knocked off Project 510 3-2, then Bellevue Athletic 2-1, to get to the Quarterfinals. They face LA 10, who finished 2nd in the SoCal Central; they beat Coachella 4-1 in the Round of 32, then East Lake Soccer 1-0 in the Round of 16. These two top California teams clash to earn the final berth in the UPSL National Finals.
John Howard-Fusco Picks…
Indiana United FC vs Iowa Demon Hawks in MASL W, Regular Season
Sat, 01/25 - 7:00pm CT / 8:00pm ET
at Hammond Sportsplex in Hammond, IN
A little bit of history is happening this weekend. The debut of the Iowa Demon Hawks women’s indoor team means that for the first time there is a professional women’s soccer team in the state of Iowa. The league also recently announced that the home of Demon Hawks, Buccaneer Arena in Des Moines, will be the site for the inaugural MASLW Championship Weekend in March.
Dan Vaughn Picks…
KC Comets vs Chihuahua Savage in MASL, Regular Season
Sat, 01/25 - 4:05pm PT / 7:05pm ET
at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence, MO
The big guns of Mexico come rolling into Kansas City to face off against the league-leading goalkeeper of KC, Phillip Ejimadu. Jorge Ríos and Hugo Puentes will be a massive test for the Comets’ defense, but also a great chance for the 5th place team to make up ground on the first-place Savage.
Josh Duder Picks…
Empire Strykers vs Tacoma Stars in MASL, Regular Season
Sat, 01/25 - 6:05pm PT / 9:05pm ET
at Acesso Showare Center in Tacoma, WA
Empire Strykers have the league’s second highest goals-for, with Marco Fabian leading the team with 15 and Justin Stinson adding another 11. Robert Palmer is fourth best in the league for Blocked Shots, with 20, but they have also allowed the fourth most goals in the league, which explains their mid-table position. Earning wins from these two games against West Coast opponents, Tacoma, could help them jockey for a higher place in the table. For Tacoma, the situation is a lot more dire. Stars have only one win so far this season and are third-bottom - they will be desperate to pull themselves off the bottom, so expect a scrap.
