Roll On Columbia: Soccer in the Pacific Northwest
NORTHWEST PREMIER LEAGUE
Three weeks into the six match season sees Yakima top of the table on GD by only one goal - they’re tied on points with both Vancouver Victory and Blackhills FC, at 6 each. Meanwhile, AC Chehalem are at the bottom with no points and a -7 GD. This weekend will see the sole team from Oregon travel north to league leaders Yakima United and see if they can contain the league’s leading scorer, Grace Terrill (4).
The other match of the week will see Vancouver Victory head up to Olympia, WA to take on Blackhills Football Club for their first skirmish of the season. The winner could end the week either on top or in second place depending on results in Yakima.
WESTERN WASHINGTON PREMIER LEAGUE
All teams have made it to, or passed, the halfway mark of the season and Wenatchee All-Stars lead the way with 22 points and +19 Goal Difference – Snohomish County, and to a lesser extent, Nido Seattle, are within touching distance. Both Nido and SnohoCo have home matches this week while Wenatchee is on the road to midtable side Harbor Force.
Grays Harbor Gulls are in real trouble, dead last, zero points and -33 GD. They’re on the road to Snohomish, who haven’t lost since May 9th. After that, the whole league will take a break until the first week of August and the Gulls will only have five matches to avoid relegation to the second division. While they do have a game in hand over Lacey and Federal Way, those two teams have 9 points each and both only have to pick up 6 points to secure safety.
WWPL Second Division
While the first division will be taking July off, the second division will play through three more weeks to decide who gets promoted. However, there is a potential for it to all be decided on Sunday with division leader, on 19 points, Seattle Umoja hosting second to last place ISC Gunners and second place Northern Peninsula, with 13 points away to a competitive Gala FC. If NorPen get anything less than 3 points and Seattle Umoja were to win, then Seattle Umoja win promotion with two weeks to spare.
EVERGREEN PREMIER LEAGUE WA
EPLWA enters week five of regular season play, with playoff seedings on the line. This year, all eight teams (four in the North Division and four in the South Division) will make the playoffs, but the regular season determines who gets to host and who has to travel. Right now, Bellingham United are the total league leaders with 12 points and a win away over second place PacNW this weekend will seal their bid for number one seed in the playoffs. Should PacNW win, however, they could really pose a challenge to the Hammers, because they still have a match in hand as well.
The South Division is even less straight forward and it may all come down to the last two weeks to determine seeding. Yakima United lead the way with 7 points from 4 played but Oly Town Artesians are only behind by one point and both host matches on Saturday, June 26th. While Tacoma Narrows may only have 4 points, were they to steal all three this weekend from Yakima then go on to win next week, even they could turn the table upside down and take the first place playoff position. Guess that’s why the games are played!
USL L2
Portland Timbers U23s, PDX FC, OVF Alliance, and Lane United FC make up the Northwest Division of the USL League 2 this year. PDX FC and Timbers U23s are tied in the table after two matches with 4 points each. OVF Alliance have 3 points on the board and Lane United will be looking for their first points when they host Timbers U23s at Civic Park in Eugene this weekend. OVF Alliance will be taking their squad to Portland to take on PDX FC and try to take over the top of the table.
OREGON WOMEN’S OPEN CUP
The first round results are in; with CFC Atletica defeating Crossfire United in an absolute cracker of a match, 3 – 2. They will move on to play WPSL team, Eugene Timbers in the semi-finals.
The second WPSL side in Oregon, Westside Timbers, are now set to face off against non-league affiliated OVF Alliance, who came from behind to defeat NWPL side AC Chehalem Valley. ACCV had gone up 3-1 at the end of the first half, but forward Sydnee Alfano scored four goals to help OVF Alliance overcome Chehalem Valley and move on to the semifinals.
Dates and kickoffs times for the semi-finals are TBD and will be announced NLT Monday, June 28th.
