Roll On Columbia: Soccer in the Pacific Northwest
NORTHWEST PREMIER LEAGUE
Vancouver Victory and Yakima United go into the final stretch of the short season tied at 9 points from 3 points and one loss each. AC Chehalem Valley threw a wrench in the schedule by forfeiting a pair of matches against Yakima United, so the table is waiting for the league to adjust the goal difference and it currently won’t act as a tie-breaker until that is resolved.
However, this weekend, If Vancouver were to win its home match against AC Chehalem Valley, and Yakima United were to lose to visitors Black Hills Football Club, then the Victory have sealed the league title. However, If Yakima match Vancouver’s result, win lose or draw, then it all boils down to the game in hand Vancouver has vs Black Hills on July 24th.
Last permutation, Black Hills FC could pip the title from both of them by winning out… anything is possible.
WESTERN WASHINGTON PREMIER LEAGUE
The WWPL has taken a break and will resume on August 1st with league leaders Wenatchee All-Stars hosting Nido Seattle - All-Stars host a second match just days later vs Harbor. If Wenatchee, already on 25 points, were to win both of those matches, Nido would have no chance of winning the title. If Snohomish County, second on 17 points now, were unable to win at Kirkland on August 14th, then the title will be the All-Stars with several games to go.
WWPL Second Division
Seattle Umoja leads the second division by five points with two match left - the last one at Northern Peninsula on Sunday, July 25th. The winner earns promotion to the first division for play in 2022. Nido Seattle 2, who are already out of the running for promotion, could play spoilers, however. They take on Northern Peninsula on Sunday the 18th, 2:00 pm at Memorial Stadium.

USL L2
Last weekend, on Sunday July 11th, Timbers U23s hosted PDX FC for a pivotal penultimate season match - had they lost, then the teams would go into the final weekend tied on points. However, Timbers U23s managed a 2-1 victory over the team actually from Portland and clinched the Northwest Division title. Timbers U23s will go to the playoffs… however they host Lane United tonight, at 7:00 in Salem, Oregon to close out the schedule.
OVF Alliance, who drew Lane United 2-2 last week, have already secured third place in the table but host PDX FC tonight in Albany. PDX FC will look to finish the year strong, with Jacob Babalai on 4 goals, looking for a hattrick to pass Timbers U23s Ivan Mykhailenko’s 6 for the division golden boot.
Timbers U23s have secured their playoff position and are waiting to find out who they play and if they go anywhere for that.
NISA Independent Cup 2021
The NISA Independent Cup 2021 kicked off last week and the two teams from Cascadia involved in the tournament squared off against each other in a 2-2 draw. The match was fairly cagy for 90 minutes with PDX FC slowly gaining a 2-0 lead, but it all evaporated in minutes when the affair finally got spicy in the 90+. A couple of well-placed free kicks later and Space United from Seattle earned a point from the match.
Space United’s match vs California Victory looks to have been rescheduled, so the only match from the tourney involving the Pacific Northwest is PDX FC’s match at the Eastside Timbers Complex, Saturday, July 17th at 8:00 pm. They will host Bay Cities FC, a new team who will play in NISA proper in 2022. Bay Cities also drew their first match vs Cal Victory FC, so it they’re just going to have to play the game to see who wins!
Oregon Women’s Open Cup
The WPSL’s Westside Timbers took home the inaugural Oregon Women’s Open Cup! They defeated OVF Alliance on Wednesday, July 7th to advance to the final where they met CFC Atletica, who had upset WPSL side, Eugene Timbers Azul the week before to get there.
Westside scored just before the half to take the lead 1-0 and held onto it, despite CFC Atletica changing formation and putting massive pressure on their opponents. The WPSL side will be given the option to represent Oregon in next year’s McKinley Cup in Penticton, British Columbia.
