New Supporter Culture Podcast Launch

This morning, Protagonist Podcasts launched a new podcast focused on supporter culture in American soccer. I sat down with host Zac Hines to discuss his own fandom and what listeners can expect from his new podcast, Those Who Support.

So what is the goal with Those Who Support?

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon I thought we could use this opportunity to share the local stories of the people doing the work to build soccer culture in North America. Expect to hear unique stories from individuals who are passionate about their clubs.

What's your background with the sport?

I came to the sport in 2015 when I stumbled into the then-named Carolina Railhawks when I was looking for something to do one night after moving back to Raleigh. I joined the local supporters group and dived head first into the culture painting tifo and restoring drums for the group. I've since branched out into covering amateur soccer in the Carolinas and even was the commissioner of a state-wide league for a few years.

How do you feel about supporter culture in the US?

Personally, I have a mixed relationship with supporter culture in the US. I believe when done well a group has the potential to be a great voice for a local community in ways that you just do not get in other sports. However, how that looks for each community varies and can lead to friction naturally. I think there are a lot of people in our circles concerned with doing things "the right way" and not what fits for their specific niche.

What role do Supporter Groups play in the growth of the game?

I think we have seen SGs do some amazing fundraising and campaigning and SG culture is at its best when used to better their communities. When SGs go beyond the 90 minutes and interact with their communities where they are it grows the game in miraculous ways.

What can people expect from your podcast?

Very little from me! I am here to platform people into telling their stories that otherwise we would likely never hear about. You will hear the origin stories and the highs and lows folks go through to make their atmosphere the best it can be.

Why was Protagonist the right partner?

I am a long time supporter of the work Protagonist has been providing for the lower leagues in the US. The network focuses a lot on the leagues, clubs and players and I thought this podcast would add a new dynamic by bringing the supporters perspective into play.

Do you support a specific club?

I am a supporter of North Carolina FC, who play in the USL Championship. I have followed the club since stumbling on them back in 2015. This year I launched my own SG called Target Strike - a drumline focused SG working on bringing back the numerous drums we used to have at games. One of the unique things we do is that before select games we have a table at the pregame fan fest where we hand out cowbells and air horns to fans.
