The Top 23 Tops of 2023: Part Two (13 to Number 1)
Yesterday we released the first half of the Top 23 Tops of 2023, where we explained our ranking process - but in a nutshell, seven panelists were given 50 shirts from last year to look at and rank them from 50 down to number one. We took their independent rankings and found the average score to create our own Top Tops list. We removed numbers 24 to 50 and narrowed it down to 23 (it will be 24 kits in 2024, etc.)
MPLS City SC are regular party goers in our end of year kits celebration and come in at Number 13 with their home shirt this year. Made by Stimulus Athletic, it had an average ranking of 19.71
Diaza’s home shirt for Inter Detroit is strong but subtle and impressed the panel with an average ranking of 19.5 to take the Number 11 spot
Number 10, Corpus Christi FC, were apex predators in this home shirt by the legendary soccer apparel company Admiral - it had an average ranking of 18.71
Voted #1 by Dennis Pope, at Number 9, Cultures United brought us this absolute gem by Diaza - it had an average ranking of 18 by our panelists. - “Culture United FC had my No. 1 top of 2023 because of the use of so many deep, engaging colors. It's the club's magnificent crest - with its Northwest totem energy - finally come to life on a larger scale.”
Oakland Roots SC grabbed the Number 8 spot with this colorful classic by Meyba - it had an average ranking of 17.71
Lane United teamed up with Hummel to bring us Number 7 in our countdown - it had an average ranking of 15.
Ranked #1 by MaryBeth Zmuda - “My number 1 was chosen because it is incredibly unique in a sea of block colors. The representation of the regional geography is beautiful. I'm sure the fans enjoy the representation as well.”
Meyba makes it two in the Top 23 Tops of 2023 with this home shirt for Oakland Soul SC - it had an average ranking of 14.67. Ranked #1 by Josh Duder - “Random patterns and shapes are great but nothing is as unique as incorporating the club’s name into the design itself. This shirt stands out and blends in at the same time - a top I would be as proud to play in as a player as I would be to wear to match as a fan.”
In at Number 5 is Redlands FC’s cream top by Hummel which had an average ranking of 13.14
Forward Madison is ever-present for kit nerds and shirt collectors - their home shirt made by Hummel this year was hot and comes in at Number 4 with an average ranking of 11.33
In at Number 3 is Queen City FC with this beautify stained-glass window design by the incomparable Olive & York - it had an average ranking of 10.14.
Ranked #1 by Kaylor Hodges - “I picked Queen City FC as the best kit for 2023 because of the ties with the Cincinnati Music Hall. Biasedly, I spent so many of my young years dreaming of performing in that Hall, so seeing the beautiful mosaic on a kit just made me feel like a kid again. Combining music and footy? Easy choice for #1.”
For two years in a row, the second-highest ranked shirt of the year is Vermont Green’s Away Shirt by Player Layer - the seven panelists gave it an average ranking of 9.28 out of the 50 shirts included.
Ranked #1 by El Johnson “A nice floral pattern is always good in my book. And I think VG is going a great job of incorporating that into their brand/design language. It’s fits their brand story well.”
Ranked #1 by Jon Hunt “For me, everything about the kit is perfect. They captured the look of a spring meadow without going over the top with the non-green colors. The sponsor and badgers all lay well on the kit too - just perfect..”
Surprisingly, the Miami FC third kit received no number one votes but garnered enough votes under 10 from the seven panelists that it had the lowest average ranking and is the Top Top of 2023! It really is remarkable - the illustration is unique and the color is vivid and can immediately be associated with the community.
