Under the Lights: AC Houston Sur (USL League 2 / NISA Nation)
Tell us about AC Houston Sur - when was the club founded and what is its mission?
The club was originally founded in 2018 playing under UPSL as Texas City United FC. After one season the club rebranded to play as Phoenix Fire FC in NSL’s Texas Conference. In 2022, the club rebranded again to AC Houston Sur and entered as a USL League Two expansion side. In 2023, the club has played in the NISA Independent Cup and is looking forward to playing in NISA Nation Texas Conference in the fall https://houstonsur.club/
Tell us about your badge and colors – what is the inspiration, and does it connect to your community in any way?
Due to the designated territory by USL League Two in South Houston, the club had to rebrand from Phoenix Fire FC to a different name since the USL did not want any confusion with the Rising Phoenix FC - the USL Championship team in Arizona. We had a consultant agency that helped us come up with a name that connects with the demographics, community, and growing much more than just a soccer club. Therefore, we chose Athletic Club Houston Sur, while Sur means South in Spanish https://houstonsur.club/profile
What league or leagues do you play in? Why did you choose that league?
USL League Two (spring/summer season) - pathway to pro.
USSL League (year-round) - squad development and finding local talents to play in USL Two season.
NISA Independent Cup (summer) - new experience and exposure to NISA organization.
NISA Nation (future) - pathway to pro-opportunity for hardworking and talented players
Do you sell merchandise or have plans to? If so, where can we find it and what are you most excited about?
We sell merchandise on our website. My favorite is the club scarf, its quality material, well designed, and definitely a standout https://houstonsur.club/shop
How has this season gone for you? What were the goals and aspirations heading into it? What is something to work on for the future?
The team finished 4th in the USL League Two Lone Star Division. We finished last in 2022, so we’re looking forward to possibly finishing in the Top 2 but things didn’t work out as planned. Moving forward we should improve on the depth of the squad to help maintain the quality of play when top players are injured or booked; also work on scoring more goals and concede less. However,
We won multiple trophies in the USSL League to include the Championship 1st place, Dave Balyeat won the golden boot for scoring 10 goals, and Robert Harrison won the golden glove for conceding less goals and most clean sheets in the season.
We won the bracket for NISA Independent Cup by winning both games against Soly FC Matamoros (DIV 2, Mexico) 1-0, and Estudiantes FC 5-1.
If there were one or two teams, within a 100 miles of you, to play a friendly against – who would you play and why?
We want to play against the Houston Dynamo first team or their MLS NEXT PRO team.
