Under the Lights: Hoboken FC 1912 (EPSL / Cosmo League)
Hoboken FC 1912 is a treasure! Can you tell us, was the club actually founded in 1912? Why was it originally started and how has that changed.
Yes, the club was founded in 1912. The club was founded by Germans working on shipping lines in Hoboken, NJ. Hoboken was a big port city through the 1950s and many of the shipping lines to NYC would actually dock in Hoboken as it is directly across the Hudson River. The shipping lines needed workers to handle passengers, baggage, maintenance, etc, similar to someone working for Lufthansa or Air France in NYC. The shipping workers lived in Hoboken and because they had played soccer back in Germany formed the Germania Fußball Club. 1917, due to WWI with Germany, there were anti German sentiments in the USA and the club changed its name to Hoboken FC. Due to less immigration, over the years the club became less and less German and by the 1970s most players were no longer German. The club is now fully multinational with American players of different backgrounds as well as foreign born players who live in the Hoboken area.

Tell us about your badge and colors – has it always been the same? Has the organization ever considered modernizing? Does the club have a nickname or a mascot?
Blue and white have been Hoboken FC 1912 colors since at least 1927. We are not sure where they came from but may have to do with certain maritime flag colors. The club's original crest was a simple circle with "HFC 1912". The club has been using the triangle crest since the 1950s. There has been on and off talk about modernizing the crest, but at this time, the consensus of the membership has been to keep the triangle crest as it is.
The club has an unofficial nickname, "The Kickers". Hoboken FC 1912 started using that name in the 1970s, when the club played matches in Bergen County, instead of Hudson County. The club has been back in Hudson County since 2012. The club does not have a mascot as of yet.
What are some of the club's most impressive achievements? Any cups or tournaments of note? Who are some of the biggest players or coaches who might have spent time with Hoboken FC?
Hoboken FC 1912 won the NJ State Cup in 1942, 1943, 1961, 1964 and 2012. Hoboken FC 1912 won the CSL championship in 1985 and 2022. Truth be told, Hoboken FC 1912 was never a “big money club”. Until the advent of professional soccer in the late 1960s, the best teams in the country played in what were officially amateur leagues such as the Cosmopolitan Soccer League (CSL). Some of these clubs had much more money and would win the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Hoboken FC 1912 was made-up mostly of tradesmen and small business owners. This is actually one of the reasons for its longevity. Many of the other clubs were reliant on one or two businesses which when they closed meant the demise of the club. Because Hoboken FC 1912 had a vibrant membership and was not reliant on one or two businesses or money guys it has been able to sustain itself
What league or leagues do you play in? Why did you choose that league and how often does the club evaluate options?
Hoboken FC 1912 is a founding member of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League (CSL), which was founded in 1923 as the German American Soccer League, by several German clubs. The league changed its name in 1977 to reflect the now multinational flavor of the league. In 2020, the CSL helped create the Eastern Premier Soccer League (EPSL) with most CSL 1st division clubs forming the Metropolitan Conference and establishing a promotion/relegation agreement between the EPSL Metropolitan Conference and the CSL. By winning the CSL in 2022, Hoboken FC 1912 was promoted to the EPSL for the 2022-2023 season. Hoboken FC 1912 still has its 2nd and 3rd teams play in the CSL and its women and Over-30 teams play in the Garden State Soccer League.
As the EPSL is the top fall to spring amateur league in the Northeast, Hoboken FC 1912 is very happy to have its top team play there.
Do you sell merchandise or have plans to? If so, where can we find it and what are you most excited about? If not, how can folks best support the club?
Most merchandise can be bought through the online "Fan Shop" which can be found on the Hoboken FC 1912 website at: hobokenfc.com. The club is also working with a few local businesses to have merchandise sold in physical locations in the City of Hoboken. We hope to have some announcements on that in the coming weeks. We are most excited about the growth in membership at the club throughout the past number of years, and the brand name that it is creating in the community throughout the Hudson County area. Our members are not only soccer players, but also individuals and businesses that love that local game and want to be part of a historical and growing local club.
How has this season gone for you? What were the goals and aspirations heading into it? What is something to work on for the future?
Earning promotion to the EPSL was a tremendous accomplishment for our football club. Last season our primary goals were to ensure we were competitive and build a strong foundation to ensure longevity at this level. While we believe our place in the table was not reflective of our performances, we’re pleased with the committed and effort of the players, coaches and staff. For the first time since 1993, the club survived relegation from the top flight and the club will be competing at the highest level in consecutive years. We believe that Hoboken FC 1912 belongs alongside the top amateur teams in the nation and we will continue to remain committed to our philosophy and principles that have transformed the culture and success of Hoboken FC 1912. Our goal is to continue to grow, become more competitive, turn strong performances into positive results next season and climb higher up the EPSL table.
