Tell us about the Laredo Heat - what is your soccer story; how did it all begin?
The Founding of the Laredo Heat Soccer Club: In 2004, the Laredo Heat Soccer Club was established, ushering in a soccer revolution in the area. The club has made a commitment to developing young talent, encouraging community involvement, and making a significant contribution to Laredo's soccer scene ever since it was founded.
How did this past season go? Any accomplishments or challenges?
A Season of Challenges and Triumphs: Reflecting on the past season, Laredo Heat faced their fair share of obstacles. Despite not making the playoffs, this marks only the third time in the club's history. Injuries played a significant role, with several key players having to depart early to pursue their education. However, amidst these challenges, one player, Jakob Schnitzler, demonstrated exceptional skill and was recognized in both the All-Conference and All-Region Teams.
What’s in store for 2024; any goals or objectives for the club for next season?
Looking Ahead: There is a tangible sense of enthusiasm and anticipation as Laredo Heat Soccer Club approaches its 20th anniversary. With the opening of a new stadium just around the corner, the upcoming 2023–2024 season is quite promising. This cutting-edge facility will not only boost the club's reputation but also bolster its standing as a cornerstone of the neighborhood.
What are your plans for the future; how do you envision growth and development?
Fostering Growth and Development: The Laredo Heat's objective is centered on fostering the expansion and development of soccer in their local area. The club has successfully promoted good community involvement through a solid youth program, ties with sponsors, and the City of Laredo. Laredo Heat hopes to maintain this expansion and broaden its influence both on and off the field with the new stadium and facility.
What steps does the club take to nurture and advance players? Are there any specific programs or pathways?
Nurturing Player Potential: The Laredo Heat Soccer Club's culture is centered on player development. The team takes a holistic approach to developing the players' skills. Laredo Heat provides a way for young athletes to realize their full potential by predominantly using collegiate players and local talent. The coaching staff of the club is also essential in offering direction and assistance during this path.
What is the state of soccer in your area; are there changes or improvements which could enhance the growth and development of the sport in the region?
Soccer in South Texas is still flourishing, and Laredo Heat is positioned to make a key contribution to its expansion. The team wants to give young Hispanic players even more opportunity as they get ready to mark their 20th anniversary and debut their new stadium. JJ emphasizes the necessity for USSF Training Centers in South Texas, highlighting the significance of providing prospective players with equal opportunity despite of their geographic location or financial capabilities.
If you were in charge of local independent soccer, what are three things which could be done to grow the game?
Three actions to Game Growth: JJ outlines three actions he would take to help the game develop in his capacity as a local independent non-MLS soccer leader. He first suggests that the USSF travel to locations south of San Antonio to give young people exposure and growth possibilities. Second, he advises using a U.S. Open Cup competition system similar to the FA Cup, where higher-level teams compete against lower-level teams at home. Finally, he promotes a balanced approach to player development, valuing pay-to-play initiatives while also recognizing other routes to a career in professional soccer.
