Under the Lights: New York Braveheart SC (UPSL)
Tell us NY Braveheart's Soccer Story - who founded the club and what is the mission?
The Club was founded by few investors who were a part of New Amsterdam FC, a club which played in the NISA Pro League. Once NAFC went into hiatus, a few of the investors joined and formed NY BRAVEHEART SC in January, 2022. The Club is currently run by CEO Robert Reitman and President Bob Chacko.
Tell us about your badge and colors – what are the elements of design and how is it connected to your community?
Our Badge represents the NYC/Long Island multi-ethnic cultures. BRAVEHEART stands for the people of NY, who struggled and endured during the rough pandemic in 2020-2021, but were resilient, brave and made it through rough times. NY BRAVEHEART represents the people of New York!
Right now NY Braveheart FC plays in the UPSL - with so many options in the NY area, what guided the club to UPSL?
UPSL is an attractive league because the quality of Teams are good, we get to travel to NJ, PA, Upstate NY. We enjoy the travel and prefer playing high quality competition even it means we need to travel few hundred miles. Also, UPSL have been bringing in MLS U20 teams, which we see as good completion, give our young players exposure and may be even get scouted by these teams. Currently, two of our players from last season are on trial with Charlotte FC’s reserve team. A couple of our players recently even went on trials with NYC FC II too. UPSL structure, Game day protocols, and minimum standards also prepare us as Club if we decide to move up to the next level- Tier III of the US Soccer pyramid.
We know soccer fans love good merch - does the club sell scarves or kits? If not, has there been a discussion?
We started selling merchandise on our team store, jerseys and scarves will be coming soon. www.nybraveheartsc.com
Tell us how your Spring / Summer season went - what changes, if any, will you make going into the Fall? What is the goal?
We went to the UPSL Northeast Region Championship Finals and also, we were the winners of the UPSL Summer American Cup. Our Goal this season is to make it to the National Finals in the UPSL.
There's always a bigger fish - if you could schedule a friendly or two with a club in your area, who would you like to face and why?
Our Club is very talented and well coached. We lost to Pancyprian Freedoms, in the US Open Cup qualifiers, 1-0 with starters missing due to not getting cleared by US Soccer. But, we had a strong performance with mostly reserve players and that shows our depth. (We currently have 3 Teams in UPSL- Premier, Div 1 and Div 2.) We’d love to have friendly games against some top competitions like NY City FC II and Red Bulls II, who are 3rd division pro teams. It would be a good test and benchmark to see if we, as a club, are prepared to move to the next tier of US Soccer.
