Under the Lights: Texas Outlaws
General Manager and Sporting Director of the Texas Outlaws, Brad Namdar, was kind enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to reply to our questions about his professional Arena Soccer team in the MASL. We’re working our way through the league and trying to get to know the people and personalities which reside in that indoor soccer universe and are grateful for his time - thank you.
One of the things we love to find out about clubs is their founding - who started your club? What was the mission or vision and has that changed over time?
The club was founded in 2019 by our club's current owner, Mr. Mehrdad Moayedi. The mission and vision of the club is, and always has been, to bring competitive, exciting, and attractive professional indoor soccer to North Texas, specifically, to Mesquite, Texas.
The team was founded in Mesquite, Texas (Dallas County) and currently plays all of our home games at the iconic, and historic Mesquite Arena aka the Mesquite Rodeo.
Historically, who is your biggest rival? What is the most important game you’ve ever played and who do you look most forward to playing against this season?
Being the club’s new GM this year, taking over the Front Office in mid-August of 2023, I can't say that I have been previously been a part of an important Texas Outlaws MASL match in years past, however, I will say that every game this season we have played thus far is an important match for our program, and we treat/approach all of our opponents with respect, as they are part of the MASL – the most prestigious professional indoor soccer league in the world.
Who are your biggest or most important players or coaches of all time? Record setters and trailblazers?
We are honored to have some of the most talented players in the country, as well as, the most players out of any other MASL franchise with players that have been called up/participate/and represent the U.S Men’s National Futsal program on the international stage.
The most recent call-ups (Jan. 2023), were Sebastian Mendez, Luis Morales, and David Ortiz, who are having fantastic seasons.
Our GK Eduardo Cortes is another standout at GK, Vinicius Dantas is having a great year up top, and there are so many other players that I could go on and on about, but you just have to tune in on Twitch to see how strong our program is.
However, it is important to know that none of our players would have had the success they had this year or years prior, without the fantastic job our coaching staff has done over the years molding these players.
Our Head Coach - Tatu, our assistant coaches, Nick Stavrou, and SAGU are extremely knowledgeable in the game of indoor soccer and are respected as some of the all-time greats in indoor soccer.
Do most of your players play both or are they dedicated to playing indoor professionally? Where do you recruit from - how does your club, or MASL, add fresh pros?
The game of soccer is the world's game as you know, you find talent in many places, and the DFW area is one of the strongest soccer hot beds in the country, so its easy to say that we are not short in local talent in this area. Though, with that being said, we have players who have played professionally (previously) in outdoor soccer leagues across the globe, players who have focused solely on developing their indoor professional soccer careers, and we have signed, recruited, and obtained players from tryouts, combines, and other avenues like most professional clubs do.
How do you keep the lights on? What are the most important marketing strategies?
We are a professional indoor soccer team, and are fortunate to have an owner that believes in our program, a strong and growing fanbase that believes in our team, a community that appreciates our efforts both on and off the field, and as a newer MASL franchise, we are always looking for ways to grow, create opportunities, and ensure that our teams long-term growth is done efficiently both on and off the field.
We have had some success on the field in such a short time period, and that was not by accident. We were a good team prior to my arrival.
When you have good players, a good coaching staff, support from ownership, and reach out to the community…good things can happen.
When you look at marketing, we focused on the name change of course, but also community outreach, developing a consistent product for our fans, and building a strong front office that reflects the professionalism required for a professional sports program.
How does your club connect with your community outside of the arena? What do you do that makes a difference?
We connect with our local community through various community outreach initiatives, service projects, supporting non-profit organizations like Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, local soccer associations, and others that keeps us busy every day!
I am proud to say that our outreach initiatives have shown results as our fan base is growing more and more every day, across the State of Texas.
I am also very proud that our program was able to participate/conduct over 30 community outreach events in North Texas, received a Certificate of Recognition by the Mayor of Mesquite at our opening match, and we have had a large coalition of local groups, civic organizations, sponsors, and other entities support our program this year.
