Under the Lights: The Boston Dream SA
Tell us about Boston Dream - when was the club founded and what is its mission?
We were founded in 2020, by myself, Alison Foley, Greta Teller, Carl Tarabelli, and others with soccer ties to create something that had been missing in Boston since the Breakers left. The mission is to keep women engaged in soccer by fostering leadership through education, community, and opportunity. As a non-profit, we wanted to provide women pathways to stay in soccer, from playing to coaching to officiating and everything that happens behind the scenes. We have been completely free for the women who play for us - from education courses to kits and any travel. They pay nothing. We rely on membership and sponsorship to do what we do. While the team is something tangible people can see and root for, the roots of the Dream network are deep with dozens of mentors and quality people who want to support women in soccer.
Tell us about your badge and colors – what is the inspiration, and does it connect to your community in any way?
Our badge colors are those of Boston, specifically selected to reflect the City and State Flag as well as the Boston Marathon colors. Our sash is to honor the Suffragettes who fought for equality. You'll also notice we are an Association as opposed to a Club, and have strived to co-exist with all entities in Greater Boston and New England.
What league or leagues do you play in? Why did you choose that league?
Since we wish to enhance and not compete against our fellow clubs and Leagues, we are non-League. We chose this to appeal to all players, as well as set our own schedule determined by what level the players want, and how often they want to play. We do not "own" any "player rights".
Do you sell merchandise or have plans to? If so, where can we find it and what are you most excited about? If not yet, what are you working on?
We have windows of merch that open up around events. Our pre-season saw us selling kits where the women would get the proceeds if someone bought a kit with their name on it. We also had a Boston Scores Charity kit, and raised over $1000 for Boston youth programs.
How has this season gone for you? What were the goals and aspirations heading into it? What is something to work on for the future?
We have had a blast with our "Game Events". Each game is tied to a community or educational event. Our game versus Northeastern was with the amazing Soccer Unity Project. Our Boston University Match-Up was in conjunction with the Boston Women's Soccer Summit. Our game versus WPSL finalist Rhode Island Rogues was with the Enjoy Life Education's Leadership Academy for student-leaders. We have monthly Game-Events all year impacting hundreds on and off the pitch.
If there were one or two teams, within a 100 miles of you, to play a friendly against – who would you play and why?
Being non-League, we have had those "Dream" match ups, pun intended. We play colleges at the D1, D2, and D3 level in greater Boston and Providence. We play UWS and WPSL teams from across New England. We play All-Star teams from local Leagues. We enhance those experiences for them, and they allow us to keep women engaged in soccer. Half of our squad were college captains. Half. That tells you the caliber of person we are attracting. A third of them are coaching at the college, high school, club, and youth levels. A third have played professionally overseas. Another third are looking to play pro. It has been an awesome journey with awesome people, and we are conuniting to grow and expand. 2023 is triple the size of 2022, and 2024 is going to be even more impactful. Dream on!!!
