Under the Lights: Port City FC (UPSL)
When was your club founded, by whom, and what is the mission?
Our club was founded by Tim Williams, Joey Lipoff, Nic Gunyon and Eion Dockery in February of 2022. Our mission is to provide a high-level outlet for young players, old players, anyone that has a desire to play at a higher level that are passionate about the game while creating a meaningful impact in our players' lives and our community.
Tell us about your badge and colors – what inspired it?
Our badge was a little of both inspired and sort of serendipitous. We basically threw together a rough badge with just these default colors of the blue, white, black and orange. We really liked the shade of blue it was so we just stuck with it. After about a month after our social media launch, a guy named Jackson directly messaged us asking if he could design us a badge for free. He loved designing soccer badges and since there weren't any really around accepting graphic work he wanted to do one for us. We told him that we really liked the blue and the seagull on the badge because of the notorious seagulls here in Wilmington. He had been to Wilmington and he knew the impact of the cape fear river bridge and used that as a focal point. The star between the F and C represents the star from the North Carolina flag. We love what he did to the badge and are extremely proud to wear it.
What league do you play in? Why did you choose that league and how often does the club re-evaluate where it plies its trade?
We chose to take part in the UPSL because of the competition it offers, it being a national league, it being a direct affiliate to the USSF, the fact that it has a fall and spring season and is not just a summer league and how much growth we see the league has for the future.
Do you sell merch or have plans to? If so, where can we find it and what are you most excited about? If not yet, what are you working on?
We did sell a few jerseys to fans in the last season but we are currently in the process of switching apparel providers so at the moment we are not selling merch.
How did you finish last season? How do you plan on improving for next year?
We finished 7th out of 11 teams. In this first season we were competing for the 6th spot which was the last playoff spot. We like to think of that as a success, we had a very slow start to the season before we really started to click as a team. During our struggles early in the season we still took the 2nd place and 3rd place teams to close matches with only one goal differences in both. With only 4 matches left in the season, we really hit our stride with 3 wins in those last 4. The loss being from the conference champion and the only perfect winning record team in the UPSL, the SC United Heat from Colombia, in which we only lost the match 1-0, having gained nothing but respect from them.
If there was one or two teams, within 100 miles of you, to play a friendly against – who would you play and why?
We'd love to have a friendly match with North Carolina FC's USL One side. It would be amazing for our players to experience a match against a proper 3rd level side, so they can see what it takes to play at that level and what they need to do for them to get there.
