Timbers SC (Colorado)
We always get excited to see new clubs and especially when they pop up in the middle of a season - with no current league affiliation, Timbers SC is still working on figuring it all out but club co-founder Tony Sabo was kind enough to catch us up to what they have so far.
When was your club founded, by whom, and what is the mission?
Timbers Soccer Club was founded in 2023 by a group of friends/players looking to create a competitive club without all of the politics we see within soccer today. As a club, our mission is to provide a platform for competitive players who share a deep passion for the game of soccer. We are committed to offering opportunities for players to continue their journey while fostering a sense of togetherness within the team, both on and off the field. We value the importance of our communities and aim to cultivate strong relationships across Colorado. Our club is dedicated to giving back to our community, contributing, and supporting one another as an integral part of our identity.
Tell us about your badge and colors – what is the inspiration, and does it connect to your community in any way?
We love the outdoors and wanted to pay respect to our land here in Colorado. Our badge and colors represent the environment within the Colorado mountains. We looked to pull cooler colors from the landscape within the mountains since it’s a main symbol within our Colorado community. The trees/mountains along with the sun and the stars are some aspects of the Colorado landscape that we enjoy most!
What league or leagues do you play in? Why did you choose that league?
Right now, we are deciding between two leagues, the Mountain Premier League (part of NISA) and the UPSL. We selected these two leagues mainly because of the competitiveness and structure of the leagues. We wanted to find a league that is competitive and well organized with fields and refs. We felt that these two checked those boxes.
Do you sell merchandise or have plans to? If so, where can we find it and what are you most excited about? If not yet, what are you working on?
Not yet but we are working on it! We are looking to release a few shirts by the end of summer. As a small start up club, its hard-to-find quality items within our fulfillment budget. We have a few options right now so I assume we will get something out soon! We are really excited to release our t-shirts and our jerseys! Our jerseys will be a thing of beauty!
How has this season gone for you? What were the goals and aspirations heading into it? What is something to work on for the future?
So we haven’t had a season yet but going into next season, we are looking to do the following:
1. Create a family mindset within the club, looking to bond as a team and work together to make something bigger than ourselves. We know players come and go so we want to make it as welcoming as possible for people.
2. Raise at least $1000 for our season fundraiser!
3. Create a sustainable model. Make the club outlast myself and the other leadership members.
4. (and not this season) To grow the club with a women’s team and also kick off our youth academy (which will be 100% free for athletes and families).
If there were one or two teams, within a 100 miles of you, to play a friendly against – who would you play and why?
At a professional level, would love to play against the Switchbacks down in Colorado Springs. Great team down there! At a more local level, I would (and we most likely will) get a scrimmage against Mamba FC. Great group of guys that are only a few more years ahead of us!
