The Magic of the Cup!

You couldn’t have asked for a better Round Three of the US Open Cup (unless you’re a Farolito fan, which we are!). The round wrapped up last night with a flurry of late-night matches that went past regular time, into extra time, and then on to penalty kicks. All good stuff.

El Paso found an equalizer in the dying moments of their rivalry matchup with New Mexico United and then crushed the penalty kicks, winning their third Open Cup match of this year’s competition (and their third USOC win all-time!). FC Naples came so close to knocking out Tampa Bay Rowdies, but lost 8-9 in penalty kicks. This Indy Eleven win over Miami FC came on a spectacular header in the 123rd minute of the match. The first night of the round, Union Omaha delivered an Open Cup special and knocked off a Championship side, San Antonio FC, 1-0.

Overall, we got few cupsets in this round, but fantastic soccer abounded. With the matches on Paramount+, some might have missed some of the magic, but highlight packages are appearing on YouTube this morning. If you do happen to subscribe to Paramount+, there’s a “All Goals Of Round Three” by day compilation available that will save you time and energy hunting down what you might have missed.

In Round Four, 16 MLS clubs will enter the tournament to take on those that advanced out of last night’s chaos. The draw will take place today at 9:15aET, as part of CBS Sports Golazo Network’s Morning Footy.
