WPSL Expansion News
Yesterday morning, the WPSL announced its first expansion team for the 2022 season—Florida Roots Futbol Club.
“We are very honored to be a part of the WPSL,” Jonathan Hammond, Florida Roots FC owner, president, and director of coaching said in the league’s recent press release. “This league provides the opportunity for consistent competition and gives our players a chance to compete against some of the best women soccer players in the world.”
The club is located in Panama City at the Tommy Oliver Stadium—a 7,000 capacity stadium—and will focus on building a roster made up of local talent who will represent the entire community. Their men’s team plays in the NPSL and just completed their inaugural season.
Florida Roots FC’s coaches and players will also be involved in summer camps for youth soccer players, an initiative that reflects their mission to build leaders on and off the pitch. The club will also be hosting its first annual tournament at the Panama City Beach Sports Complex. No confirmation yet on what conference they’ll compete in.
The league’s wording on this press release suggests that more expansions are expected, especially since many of their conferences’ seasons are ending over the next few weeks. The WPSL’s U-21 league, which is in the midst of its inaugural season, is also expected to see more additions as well.
