Breaking: NPSL to Cancel 2020 Season
This story is developing and will be updated as news becomes public.
First reported by Michael Lewis, of Front Row Soccer, the NPSL is cancelling the 2020 season due to the pandemic gripping the nation. Lewis cites an unnamed source for his information.
When we reached out the NPSL, we spoke with a league official who, off the record, indicated this was correct and to expect a statement from the league tomorrow around noon. We also reached out to NPSL club owner who informed us that the league had been waiting for a call from the USASA and speculated that the governing body may have made the final decision. If that is the case, we can expect a lot more leagues to be closing up shop for the year.

Protagonist Soccer has received an enteral email distributed to league clubs regarding the cancellation of the 2020 NPSL Season. The message is from Kenneth Farrell, NPSL Chairman. The email includes the core reasoning behind the decision to cancel the season:
“Earlier this week, USASA has extended its ban on soccer activity until April 30, and the CDC last week has recommended there be no group activities for eight weeks, which coordinates with May 10. Given these circumstances, the 2020 NPSL summer season, under its current competition structure, has been cancelled. This decision was made unanimously by our Board of Directors…This action was not taken lightly. Over the past few weeks, we have spoken to many of our teams and to our affiliate organizations. As you can imagine, every situation is different and has its own set of circumstances. We are balancing the immediate needs of our teams, and ensuring that we have a successful, thriving league for years to come.”
That decision by the USASA can be found here.
