The Town FC: Futures and Teqball for All
Earlier this week, The Town FC announced its new charity arm, The Town Futures Project. While The Town FC focuses on the soccer, The Town Futures Project (using revenue generated from the soccer arm) will focus on supporting community improvement projects and collaborating with local organizations to ensure young players in the Oakland/East Bay region have all they need to succeed and be healthy.
“When we first started the process of founding The Town FC, we asked ourselves, ‘How can on the field benefit off the field?’” said co-founder and chair, Benno Nagel, on a call with Protagonist Soccer staff.
Nagel and the other The Town FC founders then decided on a collaboration with another growing organization, one many soccer fans may have heard of already: the US Teqball Federation.
Today, The Town FC and The Town Futures Project announced a strategic collaboration with Teqball USA, a move that will benefit both organizations.
“As a purpose-driven organization that hasn’t started playing yet, we believed The Town FC was in a good position to collaborate with Teqball USA and start creating value for our community immediately,” said Nagel. “And with Teqball, all you need is a ball and a friend.”
And the iconic curved table, which The Town Futures Project will ensure is readily available throughout the region.
The club’s charitable arm will locate local organizations, schools, and programs to receive Teqball tables and other supplies needed to organically create Teqball teams and programs. In turn, USA Teqball will establish itself in one of the fastest growing soccer markets in the country with the goal of eventually having Teqball introduced as a new event at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Teqball USA to bring this exciting new sport to the Oakland/East Bay region,” said Tennyson Wilson, co-founder for The Town FC. “We believe that sports have the power to bring people together and promote positive change in our communities, and we are confident that this partnership will help us to achieve this goal.”
Teqball is a quickly growing sport in many countries, from the beaches of Southern California to the streets of Budapest–the city of its birth–you can find tables in rec centers, soccer training facilities, after school programs, and anywhere people gather outdoors for physical activity. Celebrities like Carli Lloyd and Ronaldinho regularly make appearances at Teqball events and competitions across the world. Players from NWSL teams and national teams such as the Lionesses have been pictured playing Teqball in their downtime in-between matches.
And it’s becoming especially popular in California. The current Women’s Singles World Champion, Carolyn Greco, went to college an hour north of Oakland and played for the WPSL team California Storm. When she lifted the trophy and was declared the world champion, she did so in a US jersey with the Storm logo on her sleeve. She’s since founded BellaTeq in Los Angeles, the world’s first all-women Teqball club whose mission is to empower women through Teqball.
Nagel and The Town FC hope to encourage similar projects in the Oakland region through The Town Futures Project’s partnership with Teqball USA. And who knows, maybe the future Women’s Singles World Champion is in Oakland, about to fall in love with the sport thanks to this new and exciting collaboration.
