The Villages SC (USL League 2)
When was your club founded and who got it started?
Our club was founded in 2008 as a youth club by Anderson Da Silva. We acquired the USL2 franchise in 2016.
What was the original mission?
Our mission is to promote the growth of, and appreciation for, the game of soccer by providing the opportunity for players to develop their skills in an environment that promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, and mutual respect.
What are the elements of your badge and how do they connect to your community?
The Buffalo. A few years ago there were several corrals around our town where people could see Buffalo. Even though the animals are no longer easily spotted they are still part of the community and we feel it represents the strength and fighting spirit of our players, coaches, and fans.
Notice the Buffalo's scar? It is the map of Florida and if you look closer you'll notice that the eye over the map pinpoints to our location within the State of Florida.
The font and colors come from the registered trademark of The Villages® which is owned by the Holding Company of The Villages, Inc. Because our hometown is actually America's premier adult retirement community. The badge shape and the leaves were kept from the original youth club logo when we rebranded in 2016.
What league do you play in, is that where you started?
We play in the USL League Two. Before we joined the league our co-founder, Mr. Da Silva, coached two USL2 teams (PDL at the time) named Jersey Express and Ocala Stampede. He shared the experience with co-founder Dr. Maen Hussein and they both decided to bring it to our community.
And how often do you re-evaluate your level of play and if you are in the correct league?
At this time we feel that we are in the correct league. There are talks of moving to the professional ranks, possibly USL1 in the future. At this time we are focused on expanding our soccer facility but the move to professional is definitely something we would like to do.
Are you a part of a larger youth organization or do you partner with one to provide an adult end of the development funnel? If not, have you given it any thought?
The Villages SC offer year-round youth soccer programs. In the Summer we get to add to the excitement of our USL2 team.
A lot of clubs dip into the merch game to make a little extra operational funds... or just to have fun. Do you have any kits or scarves up for sale? Tee shirts? If so, where can we find them?
We are working on getting a new kit this season so that will be available on our website just before the season starts. We are not selling other merchandise at the moment.
The next season is right around the corner, who are you most looking forward to playing in 2022? Any rivals, friendly or otherwise?
Since joining USL2 we have qualified for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup every year so that is something we really look forward to. Being able to play against professional teams such as Charleston Battery and Tampa Bay Rowdies is a plus for our staff, players, and fans. This year our first game will be in March. Being in the USL2 most of our players are in college so they won't be in town until sometime in May. This is the first year we will be playing this much earlier new format of the tournament so it will be interesting to see how our coaching staff puts the roster together.
We will definitely work on opportunities to play friendlies against professional teams again this year. Last season we played Argentinian powerhouse, River Plate, as well as, Orlando City B. We'll know more in the Summer.
Within the USL2 we have won the Southeast Division 4 out of the last 5 years which has placed a target on our back, and we're ok with that. Florida Elite SA gave us some very heated games in 2021 so we're looking forward to seeing that rivalry grow. There will be a new team coming from Orlando which is much closer than any other team we play currently so that could help to establish some rivalry.
